What should I wear on a proposal photoshoot in Venice?

In one of Italy’s most romantic cities, a marriage proposal is almost guaranteed, so making sure you’re dressed for the occasion will make your special moment even more special. Here are some tips from our Venice proposal photographers on what to wear to ensure you both look picture-perfect:

  1. Muted tones. Opt for soft, muted colours that complement the romantic ambiance of Venice. Wearing earthy tones, such as blush pink, soft gray, or beige, is an ideal choice as those tones blend seamlessly with the city’s historic backdrop. 👗
  2. Coordinating > Matching. Wearing matching colours or complementary hues creates a cohesive look, symbolizing your unity as a couple. Although you’re coordinating your outfits, you can still add subtle variations to reflect your individual styles. Striking the perfect balance ensures your proposal photo session is in complete harmony. 👖
  3. Layers! No matter where you go, the weather can be unpredictable—and Venice is no exception. Opting for layers allows you to be prepared for any eventuality. Lightweight jackets, scarves, or shawls not only add dimension to your proposal outfit but also provide warmth during cooler moments. 🧥

  2. Avoid common proposal mistakes — our top two proposal mistakes to avoid… and then that’s it for negativity! Just getting that riiiight out of the way at the beginning, so you’re good to go. 🙃
  3. Pick a meaningful time of year — choosing a meaningful time of year to propose can make your fairytale feel even more like a dream come true. ✨
  4. Plan a romantic getaway — romance hits differently for everyone, and a customized romantic getaway for you and your love can make them fall even more head-over-heels before, during, and after you pop the question! 🥰
  5. Make restaurant reservations for after — no matter what kind of proposal you plan, scheduling a restaurant reservation 🍽 for after is a great way to sit and reflect on all that transpired alongside your significant other throughout your journey together.
  6. Recreate the first date — recreating and/or incorporating your first date + your proposal makes this special celebration ❤ even better.
  7. Include family members — keeping those who are most special to you hidden until the big moment, and/or including them immediately afterwards, ☺ can help elevate and heighten all the happy emotions!

1. Capture the moment with Flytographer

Let’s just start with the most obvious marriage proposal idea: pictures! 📷 Proposal planning can be stressful enough, but that moment when you ask your love to be your best friend forever is one you’ll want to cherish — so hire a pro who can take all the pressure off you (or anyone else you know who may get sidetracked in the moments of excitement 🤳). Make sure when your soulmate says, “Yes!” you have one of our professional photographers capturing every fleeting moment. Surprise proposals are one of our Flytographer specialties, and to have a way to look back on this occasion for the rest of your life (one of the best keepsakes ever) is truly, truly special! 🫶

Photo: Claudia in Cancun for Flytographer. Hannah and Alia capture memories in Cancun with a proposal photoshoot at Playa Delfines.

2. Avoid common proposal mistakes

It may sound silly, but even when proposing, practice makes perfect. Aside from planning ahead what to say, make sure you 1) rehearse getting down on one knee, and 2) practice opening the ring box. 💍 First, having clothes you can bend in is surprisingly important, and it’s not an act we typically do in our daily life, so do a little practicing when you have some alone time! Second, opening a ring box backwards or upside-down is all too common and can really throw off the moment… or potentially ruin it if said ring were to fall through the slats on a bridge (as has happened in the past 😮💨)! That engagement ring is likely one of the most expensive purchases you’ll ever gift, so we all know losing it is probably close to the top of the worst nightmare scenarios when it comes to proposing… so let’s just not go there. 🫣

Hot tip: While this is our only idea that includes things to avoid, we have more insight about a few more things not to do 😬 when you’re proposing! 😉

3. Pick a meaningful time of year

Timing is everything, and seasons matter! 🌡 Choosing a special time of year to propose could make your proposal moment even more special. Whether it’s on Valentine’s Day, on your anniversary, by the oceanside in the summertime, with the autumn leaves falling in the crisp weather, or under a shiny Christmas tree during the holiday season — picking a meaningful time of year can make your fairytale feel even more like a dream come true. ✨

Photo: Darine in Banff for Flytographer. Andrew and partner capture memories in Banff with a proposal photoshoot at Lake Bow.

4. Plan a romantic getaway

Surely there isn’t a soul who doesn’t love a romantic getaway, right? 🛫 Even if your partner won’t want an over-the-top-grand-gesture-type proposal doesn’t mean proposing can’t happen on a getaway together. Cities like Paris and New York City are known for being romantic 😘 (and our photographers in these cities are proposal pros!), but if big cities aren’t your thing, what about something a little more chill and slow-paced? What about a private beach or mountaintop proposal? Hot air balloon ride? Outdoor adventure? Skywriting a proposal message over the ocean? Fireworks display (too much? We had to try)? The point is: Think outside the box! 👍 Romance hits differently for everyone, so a customized romantic getaway for you and your love can make them fall even more head-over-heels before, during, and after you pop the question. 🥰

Photo: Mattia in Lake Como for Flytographer. Roland and partner capture memories in Lake Como with a proposal photoshoot in Varenna.

5. Make restaurant reservations for after

No matter what kind of marriage proposal idea you have, scheduling a restaurant reservation 🍽 for after your proposal moment is a great way to sit and reflect on all that transpired alongside your significant other throughout your journey. Oftentimes after a proposal, your new fiancé may need some time to take in all that’s happened (😱) — “How long have you had the ring!?” “Have you talked to my parents!?” “How did you think to hire a photographer!?” 😉 Sitting down and looking each other in the eye at a lovely meal is the perfect way to complete this full-circle, big moment excitement. Making reservations for after your proposal not only gives them a reason to look nice (should you tell them you’re going out to eat in advance) but also provides some food and drinks to settle those nerves post-question-popping!

Photo: Flytographer in Quebec City. Lauren and partner capture memories in Quebec City with a photoshoot at Basse-Ville.

6. Recreate the first date

Your love story ❤ is uniquely yours, and particularly if your partner is sentimental, recreating or somehow incorporating your first date with your proposal makes this special moment even better. Spoiler alert: Real life isn’t always romantic (shocking, we know), so even if your first date wasn’t the best you’ve ever been on, it was yours. Creating bookends with your first date and the moment you’re committing to each other forever will surely give you bonus points in the book of romantic love. 🤗 Whether your own proposal happens in your living room, in a photo booth, or while you’re skydiving, your unique marriage proposal idea can always be tagged with your first date to really remind your lover why your first date was the best last first date ever! 🤭

Photo: Tracy in Portland for Flytographer. Jared and partner capture memories in Portland with a proposal photoshoot downtown.

7. Include family members

Including family members and/or special loved ones in your proposal is something that many couples love. Whether or not yours is a public proposal, keeping those who are most special to you hidden until the big moment, and/or including them immediately afterwards, can help elevate and heighten all the happy emotions — think of it like a somewhat impromptu engagement party! Don’t be afraid to assign help to helpers — champagne and glasses, environmental confetti… most of the time, those invited will be more than thrilled to be included and will be ecstatic to help make this moment perfect… and it takes stress off your plate! Bonus expansion: If you have a particularly zealous crew, there’s always the idea of a flash mob! 🤪 (Really though, a flash mob proposal is kind of brilliant, right? If you can pull this off, please, please make sure you take suggestion #1 seriously. 👊)

Photo: Kimon and Alexandra in Santorini for Flytographer. Brandon and partner capture memories in Santorini with a proposal photoshoot in Imerovigli Village.

8. Incorporate an activity your partner loves

What about incorporating activities that your partner loves? Reading or books? 📚 Jigsaw puzzles? 🧩 Favourite foods? 🍦 Special songs? 🎶 Stargazing? 🔭 Creative ways to pop the question are endless — you may not even have to dig deep, just get creative! The answer to a unique marriage proposal idea may be even closer than you think.

Photo: Amanda in Horseshoe Bend for Flytographer. Oliver and partner capture memories in Horseshoe Bend with a proposal photoshoot.

9. Book a boat ride

What is it about boats ⚓ that are so romantic? Whether or not a yacht 🛥 is on the agenda, boats are a great way to enjoy your proposal experience, and it doesn’t need to be wildly elaborate. Boat rides can provide a lovely, private proposal with beautiful views in so many locations. Oftentimes larger boats have music, and you can enjoy a little sunset-serenade (playlist optional). Whether it’s a private charter, or you’re booking tickets on a night cruise, organizing a boat ride could be a great place to pop the question!

Want to book a boat ride for after the proposal? Check out these engagement photo ideas to celebrate your proposal! 💍

Photo: Olga in Venice for Flytographer. Adrian and partner capture memories in Venice with a proposal photoshoot on a gondola ride.

10. Organize a picnic

One of the most classic, low-key, romantic ways to make a big impact with low stress is to organize an outdoor proposal picnic. This romantic proposal idea 🧺 can be set up in advance (think rose petals, a blanket, basket, favourite foods, bubbly… all ready to go!), or you can bring everything and set it up together to really hit them with the surprise element. “Will you marry me?” sounds even more romantic when you’re together in a special spot with the love of your life. Another fun idea is to prepare a scavenger hunt that leads to a picnic spot! 💘 This fun game takes a bit more planning but really hits home on that sentiment 🥹 we keep coming back to.

Photo: Maria in San Clemente for Flytographer. Simeon and partner capture memories in San Clemente with a proposal photoshoot at the San Clemente Pier.

Capturing Your Proposal

These best proposal ideas have been particularly fun and special for us to collect and share with you — we’re so excited for you and your future alongside your forever partner! 👏 We hope we’ve given you some new inspo before you pop the big question, or maybe even reiterated that whatever you have in mind may already be perfectly right for you two. 🤍

Congrats in advance! 🥂

TLDR

  1. Taormina, Italy — Taormina will captivate you with panoramic views of Sicily’s surrounding landscape, including pops of pink oleander flowers dotting the cliffside.
  2. Nashville, Tennessee — Nashville is colourful and bright, and places like the Cheekwood Botanical Gardens are a perfect springtime destination.
  3. Mykonos, Greece — can you just see it? The dramatic contrast of blue and white? Look a little closer and you’ll see the stunning pops of colour Mykonos is showing off!
  4. San Juan, Puerto Rico — we adore classic Old San Juan’s cobblestone streets and colourful buildings, accented by even more colourful flowers, tiles, doors, walls, and more.
  5. Hoi An, Vietnam — Hoi An is an old town that brilliantly displays a well-preserved ancient history — a colourful melting pot, rich in beauty, with walkable, winding streets and an eclectic fusion of cultures.
  6. Montreal, Canada — French-speaking Montreal is an awesome urban destination that’s charming, eclectic, and energetic.
  7. Lisbon, Portugal — old world and new dance together in charming Lisbon!
  8. Kyoto, Japan — Cherry blossom season typically spans from late March through early April in Kyoto, and cherry blossoms plus Japanese culture go hand in hand.
  9. Washington, DC — the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin are absolutely iconic — the stars of springtime in DC.
  10. Amsterdam, Netherlands — Did your mind instantly go to fields of tulips and endless natural beauty? Oh, Amsterdam!

Photo: Claudia in Lisbon for Flytographer. Kelly and partner capture memories in Lisbon with a babymoon photoshoot at Portas do Sol and the Streets of Alfama.

1. Taormina, Italy

Taormina is a hilltop town located on Sicily’s East Coast. While Taormina is a popular summertime travel destination, we love this dreamy getaway just as much in the springtime! 🇮🇹

Glamorous Taormina will captivate you with panoramic views of Sicily’s surrounding landscape. Stroll across a thin strip of sand leading out to the small but picturesque Isola Bella and explore the beautiful island house that was converted into a nature reserve. We especially love the beautiful pink 💓 oleander flowers and the stunning mountainside cliffs and ancient buildings perched high above the ocean. 😍

Photo: Deborah in Taormina for Flytographer. Rebecca and partner capture memories in Taormina with a honeymoon photoshoot in the city centre.

2. Nashville, Tennessee

Nashville is known as America’s Music City 🎸, but we’d like to add it to our list for one of the USA’s best places to visit in the spring! Nashville is awesome year-round, but spring weather in Nashville is a real treat. Nashville is colourful and bright, and places like the Cheekwood Botanical Gardens are a perfect springtime destination. 📸

Photo: Karrigan in Nashville for Flytographer. Carlyle and partner capture memories in Nashville with a couples photoshoot.

3. Mykonos, Greece

I mean, Greece is a no-brainer, right? You can just see it now — the dramatic contrast of blue and white — but look a little closer and you’ll see the stunning pops of colour Mykonos shows off. Can we all say it together? “Bougainvillea!!” (Saying and/or typing “Bougainvillea” is more complicated than looking at said pink beauty, trust us.) 🌸

Another packed summertime vacation spot, one of the best places to visit in spring is Mykonos — most visited from just after Easter (April) through October — visiting in the spring will help avoid the peak crowds you’ll find in the late summer. 😎

Photo: Maria and Elias in Mykonos for Flytographer. Lindsey and partner capture memories in Mykonos with a couples photoshoot in Little Venice.

4. San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan is Puerto Rico’s capital, situated on the north coast of the island, touching both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. We adore classic Old San Juan’s cobblestone streets and colourful buildings, accented by even more colourful flowers, tiles, doors, walls, and more. 🎨 Make sure to visit Fortaleza Street (“Umbrella ☂ Street”)  — a main street staple here in San Juan. Although we know Puerto Rico is a fantastic summertime beach destination (who could say no to white sand beaches?! Yeah, literally no one), San Juan is a beautiful, colourful springtime destination, too.

Photo: Karlota in San Juan for Flytographer. Kerri and family capture memories in San Juan with a family photoshoot in Old San Juan.

5. Hoi An, Vietnam

Located along the central coast of Vietnam, Hoi An 🇻🇳 is an old town that brilliantly displays a well-preserved ancient history — a colourful melting pot, rich in beauty. With walkable, winding streets and an eclectic fusion of cultures, you’ll pass wooden Chinese shopfronts and colourful French colonial houses as you explore. This travel destination provides plentiful outdoor activities, cultural traditions, and a bright mix of colours and textures, making it a visual delight, particularly in the springtime when the weather is dry and milder than in other seasons. Hoi An may not have been on your list before, but it’s definitely one of the best places to visit in spring! ☀

Photo: Trieu in Hoi An for Flytographer. Danica and family capture memories in Hoi An with a family photoshoot in Old Town.

6. Montreal, Canada

Montreal — considered the cultural capital of Canada 🇨🇦 — is an awesome urban destination that’s charming, eclectic, and energetic. ⚡ This French-speaking city isn’t as warm early on as some of our other springtime recommendations, but if you are looking for a late spring trip, consider Montreal! The Jardin Botanique, Mount Royal Park, and the Musée des Hospitalières garden are some of our springtime favourites to enjoy in Montreal. 🙌

Photo: Vivian in Montreal for Flytographer. Ashley and partner capture memories in Montreal with a couples photoshoot in Old Montreal.

7. Lisbon, Portugal

Old world and new dance together 💃 in charming Lisbon. Called the City of Seven Hills, reaching the top of one of Lisbon’s many lookouts rewards travellers with sweeping views of the iconic orange rooftops and the Tagus River below. In the springtime, Lisbon 🇵🇹 is one of our favourite places in all of Europe! The already colourful city becomes even more radiant when the spring blooms are in season; some Lisbon faves in the spring weather are Gulbenkian Gardens, the lawns of the Belém Cultural Center, and the Park and Palace of Monserrate. 🌼

Photo: Claudia in Lisbon for Flytographer. Collier and family capture memories in Lisbon with a family photoshoot in Portas do Sol and the Streets of Alfama.

8. Kyoto, Japan

We couldn’t have a list of colourful springtime destinations without including Japan —  namely Kyoto! 🌸🌸🌸 Cherry blossom (sakura) season in Kyoto typically spans from late March through early April. Cherry blossoms and Japanese culture 🇯🇵 go hand in hand for beauty and elegance. We highly recommend booking a Flytographer shoot whenever you travel, and Kyoto has so many incredible routes to choose from that show off all Kyoto (especially in the spring) has to offer! 🎎

Photo: Coo and Yurika in Kyoto for Flytographer. Brittany and partner capture memories in Kyoto with a couples photoshoot in the Hagashiyama District.

9. Washington, DC

Speaking of cherry blossoms, but back in America, it’s time to talk about Washington, DC! ❤ We all know the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin are absolutely iconic stars of springtime in DC. Peak bloom forecasts are a hot topic, and after you see photos of just how stunning they are, it’s easy to see why. Visiting Washington, DC in the summertime can be a hot and sweaty experience, so why not make a spring vacation happen and enjoy DC during this beautiful season? 🫶

Photo: Elisenda in Washington for Flytographer. Anissa captures memories in Washington with a solo adventure photoshoot at Tidal Basin.

10. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Last, but certainly not least, Amsterdam! 🌷 Did your mind instantly go to fields of tulips and endless natural beauty? Ours, too. Oh, Amsterdam! From flowers to windmills to Dutch delights, Amsterdam is easily one of the best places to visit in spring. Peak season here is a bit later than in other locales — we recommend late April through early May. 🗓

Photo: Joanna in Amsterdam for Flytographer. Saranya and partner capture memories in Amsterdam with a couples photoshoot at the Keukenhof Gardens.

Capturing Memories in Spring

If you’re ready to bury (or light on fire 🔥) your winter attire and bring to light all the spring clothes currently hidden in the back of the closet, you’re not alone! 🙋‍♀️ Now is the perfect time to plan your escape. 💨 We hope these fun, florally, and family-friendly springtime must-sees are inspiring you to make this dreary time of year pass a little quicker. ⏳

Other honourable mentions for springtime destinations? New York City and Paris are both delightful in the springtime — bursting with new life and colour. We also love San Diego (don’t miss Southern California’s wildflowers!), Hawaii, New Orleans … we could go on and on! Maybe consider a road trip somewhere nearby 🚗 where the scenery may be just different enough to delight your floral fancies?

Family-friendly experiences

If you’re looking for family-friendly, kid-friendly experiences, spring break excursions are a perfect time to let loose and explore new places in new ways. 🥳

1. Adventure activities

Attention adrenaline junkies, thrill-seekers, and serious explorers! 😀 If you love road trips, water sports, and outdoor activities, these are the adventures your crew will go crazy for during your spring break vacation.

    • Deep dive into nature 🧗‍♀️— whether it’s hiking, horseback riding, kayaking and snorkeling, or exploring a waterfall and/or hot spring — see what natural resources are nearby and how to enjoy them to the max. No matter where you are, nature is close by, so think outside the box when it comes to finding adventure activities! Whether these adventures include natural resources or wildlife, you’re certain to find an adventure activity provided by nature.
    • Polaris Adventures 🏎 is one of our favourite companies for those seeking adventure experiences — with over 250 destinations and 400+ experiences, Polaris Adventures is IT when it comes to adrenaline and scenery. From boats to sports cars to snowmobiles to ATV’s … we could go on and on. 🤘 Family travel jumps to another level when it comes to one of these wild outdoor adventures! Outsourcing your exploration to others who know how to max out adrenaline is a great idea to make the most of your surroundings, particularly for thrill-seekers.

Photo: Karen in Aruba for Flytographer. Tamarah and family capture memories in Aruba with a family photoshoot on the beach.

2. Parks

You knew this was coming! We’re talking amusement parks and water parks, as well as national parks and even botanical gardens. 🎟

    • We would be remiss not to talk about theme parks like Disney World, Legoland, Universal Studios, Six Flags, and more. 🎡 Orlando is one of our favourite spring break destinations because Orlando has it all, and Orlando Vacation is a great resource to build your own vacation package!
    • Viator is a perfect site to visit 👩‍💻 for incredible park experiences throughout the world — visit Viator to prep and to plan your park adventures.
    • Remember that parks don’t necessarily include white-knuckle roller coasters! State Parks and national Parks 🏞 (hello, Grand Canyon!), botanical gardens, and other green spaces can be a wonderful reason to visit an area — both for those wanting thrills and those wanting some connectivity and reflection. ⛲

Photo: Alvin in Anaheim for Flytographer. Audrey and family capture memories in Anaheim with a family photoshoot around Disneyland Main Street and the Castle.

They can be customized 💡 to individual cities/areas and are perfect to save in your back pocket for inclement weather! ☔

    • Experience First is a fantastic resource for educational tours, travel guides, and special experiences around the world. Helpful packing tips

We’re going to share some of our top helpful packing tips to make sure you’re feeling stress-free and not laden with heavy luggage! Remember — think smarter, not harder. 🙃

1. Clothing

  • Layers, layers, layers! 🧥 Pack clothing that works well together, in terms of fit, colour, and style. Lay everything out and try it on — choose to bring clothing that works well with at least a couple of other pieces 👖 to save from bringing home clothes that never saw the light of day.
  • Think of the weather. If rain is in the forecast, remember to bring items that won’t be ruined by gloomy forecasts. If the weather isn’t looking favorable, throw in ponchos and/or an umbrella — even though they aren’t cute, it’ll save you a lot of money bringing them from home 🌂 rather than buying them on vacay! 💸
  • Versatile shoes 👟 will save the day. We promise. Save the new kicks for another time, and make sure what you bring is worn in (emphasis on worn in prior to leaving town), comfortable, and goes well with the other items in your suitcase. Feeling good and looking good are the perfect match.
  • If you’re looking for a few new pieces to enjoy on vacation, we love Kotn. 👕 Known for ethical and sustainable clothes, Kotn makes basic essentials perfect for travel — comfy, cute, and friendly to the environment. ♻

Photo: Ellie in Florence for Flytographer. Nikki and family capture memories in Florence with a family photoshoot around Must-see Florence.

2. Travel essentials

  • Nothing ruins a vacation quicker than the realization that you’ve forgotten or misplaced your ID 🪪 or passport. Make sure essentials are in a safe place and are accessible quickly in the airport — we love utilizing secret pockets in bags 🎒 and making sure those documents are the only ones in that pocket. It helps ensure they don’t fall out when you’re reaching for other items like snacks or AirPods. Having a separate handy spot for other travel essentials like chargers, a first aid kit, gum, etc. will save you from at least a few headaches. 😅

Photo: Sarah in Mesa for Flytographer. Coley and family capture memories in Mesa with a family photoshoot.

3. Airport preparation

  • Grouping airport items separately from supplies you’ll need later in the day (as in, closer to hotel check-in time) is a huge time and stress saver while you’re navigating airport travel — especially if you have kids! Pack kids’ backpacks with their specific items or use a separate canvas or foldable grocery bag (which can be stored when empty) to hold water bottles (keep them empty until you’re through security), snacks, games/toys (without small pieces), comfort items, and fully charged electronics. Remember that many airports 🛃 still have you take liquids and electronics out of bags, so this is a great time for kids to help with their water bottles and devices in their own bins as you move through security.

We easily connect people with trusted photographers for fun photo shoots and have captured over three million memories worldwide. The magic of Flytographer is both the experience and the photos. Explore the city with a fun, talented photographer and get wall-worthy photos to relive your trip forever. Today, we asked our local photographers to share all the best things to do in Tokyo! 😉

  3. Immerse yourself in art: Tokyo is an art wonderland with something for everyone.
  4. Visit Senso-ji temple: The city’s oldest Buddhist temple.
  5. Find Zen at the Meiji Shrine: A centenary Shinto shrine with a serene atmosphere surrounded by forest.

1. Witness the Shibuya Crossing

Shibuya is Tokyo’s beating heart, an area that attracts the cool crowd for its trendy boutiques, department stores, restaurants and nightlife options. Still, the real showstopper is the world-famous Shibuya Crossing, the world’s busiest pedestrian crosswalk. 🚦🚶‍♂️

Joining the crowds crossing the streets is an exciting experience. Some rush across, while others pause in the middle to take pics. This sounds a bit ludicrous, but trust us: once you cross the street once, you’ll probably want to go back and do it again and again… It’s just so fun! 😁

It’s also fun to see everything from a different viewpoint. One option is the glass-walled walkway at Shibuya Station that leads to the Shibuya Mark City complex, and there’s also Shibuya Sky, one of Tokyo’s newest and most Instagrammable observation decks, another excellent spot to admire the Shibuya Crossing and mind-blowing views of Tokyo.

Photo: Cho in Tokyo for Flytographer. Phoebe captures memories in Tokyo with a solo adventure photoshoot at the Shibuya Crossing.

2. Climb the Tokyo Tower

The Tokyo Tower is another icon of the city. Admiring it from afar is already nice, but getting up close is just fantastic, especially when you see it from the Zojoji Temple that sits almost at its base. 🗼 The contrast of old and new makes for a quintessential Tokyo pic!

The tower’s observation decks are a total hit. The main deck features a glass floor, while the top offers an impressive bird’s-eye view of the city. On clear days, you can even spot Mount Fuji on the horizon. Sunsets are highly suggested. 🗻

After soaking up the great vistas, stop by the Tokyo Tower Highball Garden, a terrace at the base of the tower where you can try some highballs and beer with Japanese snacks.

Photo: Cho in Tokyo for Flytographer. Amanda and partner capture memories in Tokyo with a couples photoshoot near the Tokyo Tower.

3. Immerse yourself in art

Tokyo is an art wonderland. From museums dedicated to traditional fine art to those celebrating anime culture and superstar artists, there’s something for everyone. 🎨

Although not large, The Yayoi Kusama Art Museum is a must-see. You can literally immerse yourself in the artist’s polka-dot world and learn her amazing story as an avant-garde artist that’s unlike any other.

Speaking of immersive experiences, teamLab Planets takes digital art to a whole new level, transporting you to a fantastical world of light and movement. Some works even react to your presence, making you feel part of the magical scenario. 😮

Anime lovers will marvel at the delightful world of the Ghibli Museum, which presents some of Studio Ghibli’s most iconic creations. The museum itself is a whimsical work of art, resembling a storybook come to life.

For fine art, head to Roppongi Hills, where you’ll find some of the best art galleries in town, as well as museums like The National Art Center Tokyo and Mori Art Museum.

Heads up: for Yayoi Kusama Art Museum, teamLab Planets, and Ghibli Museum, make sure to book your visit in advance.

Photo: Miho in Tokyo for Flytographer. Ryan and partner capture memories in Tokyo with an engagement photoshoot at TeamLabs.

4. Visit Senso-ji Temple

The traditional Asakusa neighbourhood is home to one of Tokyo’s prime sightseeing spots, the stunning Senso-ji Temple, the city’s oldest Buddhist temple. It’s a layered experience: before reaching the temple, you cross the majestic Kaminarimon Gate with its giant red lantern and then stroll through Nakamise Dori, a charming shopping street with souvenirs and street food options, to reach the imposing main hall with all its ancient grandeur, teeming with activity. 🏮

If you want to escape overwhelming crowds, a great tip is to visit the temple in the evening; the main hall and the pagoda right next to it look extra beautiful when illuminated.

While in Asakusa, you can stroll along the Sumida River and admire fantastic views of the Tokyo Skytree, Japan’s tallest structure. That’s also a great spot to try some kimono fitting (can you imagine the pics?) and jump on a boat tour to Odaiba in the Tokyo Bay area. 👍

Photo: Daniel in Tokyo for Flytographer. Raha and partner capture memories in Tokyo with an engagement photoshoot at the Senso-Jo Temple in Asakusa.

5. Find Zen at the Meiji Shrine

Are you seeking to experience the Zen essence of Japan in the heart of Tokyo? Meiji Shrine, also known as Meiji Jingu, is a centenary Shinto shrine with a serene atmosphere and is just a stone’s throw away from the hustle and bustle of Harajuku and Shibuya.

Make your way through a lush forest adorned with beautiful Torii gates and colourful sake barrels (those are offerings to the gods) to reach the main hall — a perfect example of Shinto architecture framed by two massive camphor trees. 🌳

On the shrine’s grounds, there are also secondary Shinto shrines and Japanese gardens for you to explore. The Inner Garden, for one, was commissioned by Emperor Meiji and filled with delicate iris flowers.

Pro tip: a day trip from Tokyo, the seaside town of Kamakura is also a wonderful place and home to several Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines. ⛩

Photo: Daniel in Tokyo for Flytographer. Emily and partner capture memories in Tokyo with a honeymoon photoshoot at the Meiji Shrine.

6. Relax at the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden

A 10-minute walk from Shinjuku Station, Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is a perfect spot to take a break from your city exploration. The park boasts pristine Japanese and Western-style gardens, including French and English gardens, vast lawns, meandering paths and picturesque ponds. 😍

Are you visiting during the cherry blossom season? You’re in for a spectacle! Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden is one of the best places in Tokyo to see the sakura in full bloom — the park becomes the stage for a true pink extravaganza. 🌸

Another urban park worth visiting is Ueno Park, home to the Tokyo National Museum, the Ueno Zoo, beautiful historical monuments, and more Japanese temples and shrines.

Photo: Cho in Tokyo for Flytographer. Kaitlyn and partner capture memories in Tokyo with a couples photoshoot at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.

7. Fashion hunt at Harajuku

Trendy, vibrant and filled with contemporary Japanese culture, Harajuku is a must-visit for anyone eager to witness outlandish Japanese fashion. The streets are lined with vintage boutiques, second-hand shops and street art, and they become a daily stage for teenage culture to flourish.

Did we mention some things get outlandish? Harajuku food and snacks elevate dessert to a whole other level; think rainbow grilled cheese, giant anime cotton candies and animal-shaped ice creams. 🍦🍬🍭

For a more upscale feel, head to stylish Omotesando Avenue. Known as the Champs-Élysées of Tokyo, this tree-lined avenue is home to chic boutiques and charming cafes. Don’t forget to stop by Tokyu Plaza Omotesando and capture a photo at its kaleidoscopic mirrored escalator, one of Tokyo’s biggest Instagram sensations! Need some rest? Don’t skip a visit to the beautiful Yoyogi Park.

Pro tip: if you only have a short time in Tokyo, it’s easy to combine your visit to Harajuku with Meiji Shrine and Shibuya — all are within walking distance from Harajuku. 👌

Photo: Daniel in Tokyo for Flytographer. Ingrid and family capture memories in Tokyo with a birthday photoshoot in Harajuku.

8. Indulge in Japanese cuisine

All this urban exploration is bound to work up your appetite! From cheap street food to Michelin-starred restaurants, there’s something in store for every foodie in Tokyo. 😋

If you want to combine a great atmosphere with Japanese flavours, visit one of Tokyo’s “yokochos,” alleyways where you’ll find hole-in-the-wall restaurants serving amazing ramen, udon, soba and yakitori. And that’s also where you’ll find the traditional izakayas — the Japanese version of a pub. Omoide Yokocho is one of the city’s most famous.

We can’t speak of Japanese food without mentioning sushi, right? If you’re on a budget, you can have a sushi feast at conveyor belt sushi restaurants around the city — keep your eyes peeled for Kura, Sushiro, and Uobei. For something more fancy, Ginza is home to countless upscale sushi bars. 🍣

Pro tip: have you heard of sea-to-table sushi? Visit either Tsukiji Fish Market or Toyosu Market, both of which feature restaurants where you can savour the freshest sushi in town. The latter is renowned as the world’s largest fish market and as the stage for the famous tuna auction.

Photo: Eriko and Said in Tokyo for Flytographer. Huyen and family capture memories in Tokyo with a family photoshoot in Shibuya.

9. Watch sumo wrestling

Sumo is not just a sport in Japan; it’s deeply rooted in the country’s history. If you find yourself in Tokyo during the sumo tournaments, it’s a great idea to witness these heavyweight huggers in action. Sumo tournaments take place three times a year in Tokyo — January, May and September — at Ryogoku Kokugikan, the national sumo stadium. 📆

If you are not in Tokyo during the tournament season, you can still see sumo wrestlers in action by booking a visit to a morning sumo practice at one of the city’s sumo stables or by catching a glimpse for free through a window at Arashio-beya. However, the latter option has limited dates, so plan accordingly by checking their website.

Photo: Miyuki in Tokyo for Flytographer. Sehee captures memories in Tokyo with a new chapter photoshoot in Asakusa.

10. Go on a day trip

Japan is extremely well-connected, and Tokyo is close to several other amazing destinations that can be explored through day trips — some just a few train stations away from your hotel. Here are some ideas:

  • 📍Nikko: less than a two-hour train ride from Tokyo, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled in the mountains, offering great hiking opportunities and home to Toshogu, one of Japan’s most impressive Shinto shrines.
  • 📍Hakone: this scenic mountain town, about an hour and a half train ride from Tokyo, is famous for its hot spring resorts (onsen) and offers nothing short of spectacular vistas of Mount Fuji.
  • 📍Mount Takao: about an hour away from central Tokyo, offers more scenic hiking options, including walking up to the top of the mountain for breathtaking views of Fuji the Great.
  • 📍Lake Kawaguchiko: another hot spring resort town and the most accessible Fuji Lake, boasting some of the best views of Mount Fuji. The train ride varies from one and a half to two and a half hours, depending on the train you take.
